Genmai Cha is a classic Japanese green tea, blended with toasted, popped rice. Originally created to stretch short supplies of tea, now enjoyed by tea lovers here and abroad. Warm and nutty taste, with a lovely savoury quality. A hearty cup of tea that is easy to combine with food. Genmai Cha is a great solution for those seeking a substantial, but less astringent, flavour from their cup.
This tea contains a moderate level of caffeine | Steep at 80°C for 2-3 minutes.

“ So many other reviews have summed this up better than I can. It’s hit-or-miss for me since I have to be in the mood for puffed grains in my tea, but I recently tried it with a bit of green tea honey and it was reminiscent of cereal I had growing up (insider tip for those who don’t like savory teas). Definitely worth a try if you’ve never experienced it. ”

“ One of my top 5 fave teas. The popcorny flavor and slight grassyness really works for me. I always cold brew this one at least overnight. ”

“ Love this tea...and also the Matcha and Masters' Shincha version! I add just a skosh of rock crystal sugar to balance the notes and make it yummy! ”
Unlike the affordable luxury it has become today, historically, tea was a pricey commodity. The Japanese peasants found it difficult to afford much tea, and would mix it with roasted rice, which was abundant and cheap. Thus, they were able to squeeze more cups from the same amount of leaves. A recipe born of poverty, Genmai Cha has acquired an uptown chic and is now a favourite of urban dwellers in Japan and the West.
